1) Hey how are ya what you workin on now?

BJ Penn. I get tons of emails a week but can’t find any good pictures to work from. I’m just hoping he doesn’t come out looking like Danny Abbadi.

2) What got you into MMA?

Watching Ken Shamrock at UFC 1 back in ‘94 when I rented the video tape.

3) Who do you sponsor or who sponsors you?

Neither, really. There are guys who I do stuff for that do stuff for me out of mutual respect. Yok’d clothing, Warrior Wear, Nate Quarry, Paul Buentello, Rich Franklin, Mayhem Miller, MMAFanatics.com, RyanLoco.com, Mike Swick, Josh Haynes, Ed Herman, GOZE, Carl Sharkey “The Dye Sub”, Jeff “Sherdog” Sherwood, Josh Hedges, Rampage Jackson, and Kendall Grove to name a few. Everyone has been really good to me that I mentioned and I do whatever I can for them as well.

4) Tell us more about you as a person?

I’ve been married for 6 years and we have a 4 year old son. He is the greatest thing to ever happen to me. I love watching movies and tv and I haven’t drank alcohol for 15 years. So, basically I am a boring homebody that plays video games, watches movies and draws. I’m a 33 year old man living like a 15 year old kid.

5) What got you into MMA and when?

Watching Ken Shamrock at UFC 1 back in ‘94 when I rented the video tape. Whoa… I’ve seen this before.

6) Who is your fav MMA fighter?

Anyone but Paul Buentello.

7) What in your view was the best fight of the year thus far?

The best was watching BJ dominate Matt Hughes until he got hurt. This was the one time where everyone in my house was up and off the couch screaming.
8) What fight would you have loved to be at live but couldnt and why?

Mayhem vs Lawler. Jason is my friend and I really would have loved to have seen him fight live for the title. I couldn’t even get it on tv. So I was texting back and forth with his girlfriend who was giving me frequent updates. I couldn’t go out to Hawaii because I have a lot to do here (in San Diego).

9) What are your opinions of the blow up of the MMA today in the US?

I love the explosion! HOWEVER there are 2 things that can diffuse this explosion.
a. The fickle fans that turn their back on the favorite fighters when they lose. Online they go to forums and just hate on everything. This turns away new fans and turns away old fans.
b. The UFC is saturating the market. There are so many fights all the time that when the ppv comes out you can barely recognize who is on the card. If they don’t pay the big name fighters more money then the cards will continue to suck with guys that have a 4-1 record that are willing to fight for $2,000. The HW division and LHW division is so bad in the UFC right now and these divisions are the bread and butter of every other organization. It pisses me off because if the UFC wanted they could put every organization in the past by signing the best fighters by paying them the best dollars so they get the best return on ppv buys. All these “dream matches” would take place and all questions would be answered. Right now there is Chuck…. and then everyone else below him. He has murdered the top UFC guys in Randy, Babalu, and Tito. Murdered! Bring in the competition to see who really is the best in the world. Shogun, Rampage, and Wanderlei would not go out like the previously mentioned 3. Fans want to get their $40 worth when buying a ppv. But cards with Dan Lauzon, Chieck Kongo, and Mike Nickels are on it. No disrespect to these 3 but I’m just saying fans would rather see names like Faber, Filipovic, Lindland, and Shogun instead to pay their $40 for. So instead of paying out $300k to fighters and making $30 million they could pay out $600k and make $33 million. I’m no marketing major but I think it is worth the risk. The UFC has the product, it’s just time to let loose the reigns on their money a bit. Sorry for that rant but just speaking what fans are thinking.

10) How long does it take for you to compleate a drawing?

40-60 hours. Or 1.5 - 2 weeks. Or 20-30 movies. Or $0-60 Law and Orders. However you want to look at it.

11) Who in your opinion will take this next UFC card?

Matt Hughes < Georges St. Pierre
Tim Sylvia > Jeff Monson
Brandon Vera > Frank Mir
Alessio Sakara > Drew McFedries(See ..9 b. above))
Joe Stevenson > Dokonjonosuke Mishima
Nick Diaz > Gleison Tibau(See ..9 b. above))
Brad Imes > Antoni Hardonk (See ..9 b. above))
Jake O’Brien > Josh Shockman(See ..9 b. above))
Hector Ramirez > James Irvin (Irin is 1-2 in the UFC. They brought him back, why?)

12) What music are you into atm?

Tool, Primus, Faith no More, Rage Against the Machine, APC, and my son makes me listed to Kidz Bop which is torture.

13) What move makes you jump outta your seat like someone Just turned on the music to Dixi Chicks ;)?

In a good way… Tackling my son and giving him kisses.
In a bad way…. When someone turns on the Dixi Chicks, people with bad gas, and close talkers.

Thanks for takin the time to fill this out if there is anything else youd like to say have at it…..

Thanks for all the support that fans of my art have given me! Also, just want to say I miss Ryan Bennett badly. The fans have been great buying memorabilia sold by Randy Harris on EBay to support the Bennett family. He was the example that EVERY fighter and fan should follow in regards to mma.

Charlie Warhammer

1) Tell us how you got into MMA?

I started training at the age of 4, so I’ve been training now for 32 years. I started with Boxing, then added Muay Thai and Aikijutsu a few years later. Over the years, I have cross-trained in several art forms, including Ju-Jutsu, Pankration, Tai-Jutsu, CQC and so on. I have pursued five of them to levels of instructorship.

2) What’s your training schedule like?

Training is an all-day, everyday thing for me. I start the day with some light cardio, followed by a thorough strength training session which lasts about 1 and 1/2 hours. At mid-morning comes a Thai Boxing conditioning session, followed by a detailed cardio workout. This lasts about 2 hours. After lunch the focus is on close quarter combat for about 1 and 1/2 hours. In the early evening I focus on an integrated training regimen of Muay Thai and grappling practice. That’s followed by a functional strength training session. That takes about 2 to 2 and 1/2 hours. There are also aquatic strength training and combat training sessions twice a week. Any downtime during the day is spent teaching group classes or private lessons to my students.

3) What were the results of your last fight?

My last fight ended very quickly. I landed a great punch early in the fight, knocking the guy out. It was over inside of 30 seconds.

4) When is your next fight?

I’m retired at this point. Technically, I was retired before, but came out of retirement to answer the challenge match in the last question.

5) Who are your sponsers?

Well, none anymore.

6) Where do you wanna train at that is like a dream to you?

Basically, I do that now. I’m very happy to be training where I am. We’re able to pioneer a program that gives MMA and martial arts training academic standing in this country. That’s a big deal for me. I’ve owned and operated my own academy in the past, and will probably do that again in the future. Right now my primary focus is furthering the development of this program, and training my fighters.

7) What do you think was the fight of the year thus far?

Hard to say. Silva vs. Franklin was very good, but the results were predictable.
8) What type of music are you into?

I love classic rock and roll, love the Dropkick Murphys, but can also be perfectly happy listening to the bagpipes for hours. What can I say, it’s in my blood.

9) How does your family feel about you fighting?

I think at times they proably questioned my sanity. Seriously, they had pretty normal reactions I guess. Always worried about my safety, but proud of my performance. Of course, they get to see the results of years of abuse and injuries that most people don’t see.

10) Tell us something that makes you blush?

I don’t really know. I’d have to be surprised I think. If I can see it coming, then it won’t get to me.

11) What are your thoughts on the blow up of the MMA today in the US?

It’s about time! I’m happy that it’s growing like it is. I have some concerns about some of the attitudes out there - it shows a lack of professionalism and discipline that I don’t like to see exhibited in the martial arts. However, the growing popularity and awareness is good for the sport.

12) What fight would you like to go to this year?

I wouldn’t mind going to see Liddel kick Ortiz’s ass.

13) What fight out of all the fights you have been in was you fav one and why?

There have been many memorable ones. When I first won the title in ‘93 is still probably my favorite. I was the underdog by a big margin, and rightly so. It came down to focus and heart, and it was a defining moment in my life.

Thanks for takin the time to fill this out. If there is anything else you’d like to say have at it…..

I would like to thank MMA Discussions for this opportunity, and to sommend you on what you’re doing with your organization. I think it’s great!

I’d also like to give much respect to the students and fighters in the MMA world. The training, and the lifestyle, are decidedly difficult. Keep training hard and stay the course.

Thanks again Mr. Charlie ;)

Jason Bell

http://www.myspace.com/JasonDBell

1) What got you into MMA?

For years, I have had a passion for fighting and competing. It has always felt natural to me to be wrestling, kicking, or throwing puches; almost like a need to do it. Seemed like the next logical step was to compete. MMA gave me that opportunity. I love having a goal to focus on.

2) What were the results of your last Fight?

Well, my last fight was my first fight. I won at 1:03 of round 1 do to TKO.

3) Who are your sponsors?

Currently, I have no sponsors. I will look for that once I have a few more fights and prove I am worthy of this.

4) What is your signature move?

Ground and Pound. Take em’ down, and beat them til they quit.

5) How does your family feel about you fighting?

My wife is now one of my biggest supporters. She was shaky at first, but now seems to be very in to it all. My kids love the idea, as they see me as one of the guys on tv when they see me in the cage fighting. The parents are not at all in to it. They love to see me do well at anything I do, but do not get the fighting thing. My Mom can not watch it. She always hated to see me wrestle too though.

6) What are your thoughts on the blow up of MMA in the US today?

It is OUTSTANDING. I love it. I do all I can to be part of helping it grow. For years, I have waited to see this happen. Since I first watched UFC 1. All I can say is; it is about time !

7) When is your next fight?

Unsure at the moment. I was set to fight Craig Machado November 2nd at the Xtreme Gladiators event in Delaware. The event has been canceled and we have no idea if there is going to be a reschedule. I am currently searching for fight cards.
8) What music are you into atm?

Anything that gets me pumped up and moving. Hard-Core rap, or hardcore metal. PowerMan 5000 is at the top of the list for me.

9) Where would you love to train at that is like a dream?

I would love to train in Rio De Janeiro Brazil with Renato Sobral and his guys.

10) Who do you wanna fight atm?

Any lightweight fighter that is in my way. I want to move up in the MMA scene, and will fight anyone I need to get to where I wish to be. Honestly, I do not care who it is I am fighting.

11) What other sports do you watch or attend?

Football, Go Steelers ! K-1, Muay Thai, Judo, and boxing.

12) What 3 things do you focus on while training?

ENDURANCE, I have no desire to gas out while competing. When the other guy is puking or gasping, I will be there laughing. I can push on and on, and then still finish out hard. I believe this will be an advantage later.
TECHNIQUE, I Try to be sharp with all I do. I have had a brawling style, and I am trying to get rid of that and be more technical.
STRENGTH, I find it to be a luxery to be stronger than the man I am facing. I like to be in control. Make them react to me and what I am doing. Strength gives me that chance to impose my will.

13) Whats your training schedule like?

I strength train 5 days a week, following each workout with 45 minutes of cardio work to push my limits of exhaustion. I run distance three nights a week. Three nights are dedicated to Muay Thai training. Two days a week, I have military calisthenics at work, on top of everything else. Probably 3 days a week I get in mat time for wrestling and submissions work.
I am fortunate to only have a four day work schedule, so I get a little extra time than some others get to train. As well, I travel to meet others, and bring new people in here to train with and exchange styles.
